| The Golden Circle The Golden Circle encompasses Iceland’s most exciting natural attractions; Gullfoss, Geysir, Þingvellir and Kerið. Gullfoss means “Golden Falls” in Icelandic, and it is the most famous waterfall in Iceland. This incredible waterfall cascades down 32 meters into the mighty glacial river Hvítá. Geysir is a world famous geothermal area. Here you can see the ‘Great Geysir’ which was the first discovered and named in the world. Strokkur is also located in this geothermal area, blowing over 25 meters into the air every 6-8 minutes. Þingvellir is a rift valley that is part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This is where the continental plates of America and Eurasia are separating at a rate of 1.98 cm/year. The intriguing geology around Þingvellir fascinated the early settlers of Iceland and this is where the Vikings established the country’s ancient parliament of Alþingi, back in 930 AD. Kerið, a 3,000 year old implosion crater is also visited on a Golden Circle tour.
